Iced Chai Tea Latte

yield: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
A creamy, perfectly spiced iced chai latte made with a homemade chai concentrate, frothed vanilla-cinnamon almond milk, and ice. Bold, refreshing, and better than any café.

Ingredients

For the Chai Concentrate

  • 12 whole cloves
  • 8 green cardamom pods
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1.5 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 5 cups water
  • 5 Assam tea bags or loose leaf black tea
  • 6 tablespoons sweetener of choice I used Manuka honey

For the Frothed Milk

  • 3.5 cups almond milk or any milk of your choice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla syrup
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

Instructions

  • Place the whole cloves and green cardamom pods in a mortar and pestle and crush them thoroughly. Mix in the ground cinnamon and ground ginger. If using whole cinnamon sticks and fresh ginger root, crush or chop them along with the cloves and cardamom.
  • Toast the crushed spice mixture in a dry pan on the stove over low heat for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Transfer the toasted spices to a pot with the water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Bring back to a boil, then immediately remove from heat.
  • Add 5 Assam tea bags and steep for 4 to 5 minutes only. Do not oversteep.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a container to yield the chai concentrate. Let it cool completely.
  • In a mug or small pitcher, combine almond milk, vanilla syrup, and cinnamon powder. Froth with an electric hand frother for 15 to 30 seconds until rich and creamy.
  • Add ice cubes to a glass, pour in equal parts chai concentrate and frothed almond milk, stir in sweetener, and serve.

Notes

  • You can use whatever type of milk you like. Oat, coconut, and dairy milk all work well.
  • Make the spice mix in a jar ahead of time to save time on future batches.
  • If meal prepping, make the chai concentrate in advance and store it in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Do not oversteep the tea bags. 4 to 5 minutes is the sweet spot to avoid bitterness.
  • Froth the milk fresh each time for the best texture. Do not pre-mix it with the concentrate for storage.
